THE UPSHOTS OF THE GREAT PORT OF MOMBASA.

The history of the Port of Mombasa records way back in 1890 from it's existence as the Old Port. The Port used to serve dhows from Arabian Gulf, Far East and India. It is situated near Fort Jesus at Mombasa Old Town.The Port of Mombasa is currently managed by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA),which is a parastatal fully owned by the Kenyan Government. The Port of Mombasa comprises of Port Reitz, the Old Port, Port Tudor,Kilindini Harbour and the whole of the tidal waters encircling Mombasa Island.
​The Port of Mombasa is the key entry and the exit point for cargo belonging to a vast hinterland that include Kenya, Uganda Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, South Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia.That draws how important the Port is to the residence of Mombasa County.
The Port of Mombasa has several impacts to the Kenyan National Government,Coastal County Governments and the communities around coast.The Port has created vast opportunities of employment to the locals.The current face of the Mombasa Port is a combination of many people from different tribes who serve as bread winners for their families.
The Port operations in Mombasa have also boosted the trading activities in the area.The large scale and the small scale business have thrive best as a result of port existence.
Infrastructural sector being one of the top assets of production has not been left out.The port operations have led to the construction of many standard road networks in Mombasa County and also the construction of Standard Guage Railway which transports people and goods to and fro Mombasa-Nairobi.
The Port has also led to the introduction and growth of social amenities as a result of Port operations.Health facilities and schools such as Shimo la Tewa High School are enjoying the support from the Kenya Ports Athority.These amenities help the public like for seeking medical support and for Educational reasons.The port operations in Mombasa have also gave a boost to the revenue collection to the county Government.Another social impact of the Mombasa Port is the rise in population.People from different parts of the world come together with different objectives then in the long ran,the number of people living around increases.People also get married.

Port operations have also gave a rise to some negative effects.These includes the increase in crime rate as complained by the residence living around and also confirmed by the security team.
The 16 Billion project has also interfered with the fishing patterns due to change in water visibility.This has highly affected the aquatic life hence sale reduction  in fish markets.

Tourism has also been affected by water pollution,making the beaches in South Coast less attractive for swimming and reef walwing activities.
Above everything,the great port of Mombasa has aided many residence hence it stands to be protected.
